“Creating Impressionist Landscapes in Oil”, by Colley Whisson
Colley Whisson pictured left has been immersed in the art world all his life. As a prolific artist, based in Queensland, he works outdoors as much as possible. A follower of the Heidelberg School of artists he has a special fondness for the works of Arthur Streeton and once presented a seminar entitled, “In Streeton’s Footsteps”.
Collie’s interpretation of tone, colour and light along with his quality brushstrokes are well evidenced in the many illustrations in this book. Divided into three parts, “Definition of Impressionist landscape”, “Impressionist painting techniques” and a large section on “Demonstrations”, it is a valuable reference tool for budding artists. “The last pieces of friendly advice,” on page 116, could well be considered, the solid basis for all enthusiastic artists to follow. Colley refers to use of tone, bold colour, composition, not too much detail and suggests, more importantly that we all “stay relaxed”.
This book review was particularly selected to provide a little background to the works and techniques of Colley who will be conducting a full day workshop at PAS studios in June 2009.
